One-day conference about API documentation and developer portals

API the Docs is a free event for tech writers, API developers, product owners and developer evangelists who embrace documentation as a crucial aspect of a great developer experience. We believe the conference is a great opportunity to share and discuss the latest best practices, strategies and new trends relevant to API documentation.

Agenda

09:00-09:30 / Arrival & registration
Onsite registration is mandatory. Please do not forget to show up at the Registration Desk.
09:30-09:40 / Welcome
Welcome by Koen Adolfs and Kristof Van Tomme
09:40-10:10 / Cristiano Betta - The Seven Deadly Sins of Developer Onboarding
Have you ever tried to use a new API or developer tool that was recommended to you, only to rage-quit your browser after 30 minutes of circling back and forward between the documentation and the developer dashboard? If so, this talk will provide some cathartic relief for all of you.
10:10-10:40 / Alaina Kafkes - Building Beginner-Friendly API tutorials
API documentation writers are afflicted with the curse of knowledge. Paradoxically, knowing the ins and outs of an API makes creating beginner-friendly API tutorials a challenge. In this talk, I present a framework that writers can use to build tutorials that are accessible to new API users.
10:40-10:50 / Coffee break
Grab a coffee in the hall.
10:50-11:20 / Koen Adolfs - Open banking: Let's go Beyond Banking!
Triggered by PSD2/Open Banking, Open APIs will change banking as we know it rapidly and fundamentally. Join the talk of ABN AMRO to learn about our Open Banking journey, the innovative APIs we offer, how we do it and our ‘Beyond Banking’ community.
11:20-11:50 / Anthony Sansone - Writing for Scale: Streamlining API Documentation Maintenance
Your biggest customers want to move away from your nice web app to automation. Your API docs are spaghetti. How do you whip the docs into shape without losing your mind? Let’s review how MongoDB rebuilt its API docs with research, review and refactoring.
11:50-12:00 Coffee break
Grab a coffee in the hall.
12:00-12:10 / Emile Bremmer - Viewing a developer's API journey through logs
Logging activities in our API sandbox environment provides us a detailed view how external developers are interacting with our API’s. This should in turn point us to the parts of our API documentation that can be improved. Furthermore we can objectively measure whether improvements were effective.
12:10-12:20 / Jessica Ulyate - From dreadful to Dreddfull: automated testing for your API
Jessica will tell you about API specification languages, and why you should be using them not only to write your API reference docs, but to test them as well.
12:20-13:50 / Lunch break
Please visit nearby restaurants in small groups to continue the conversation over lunch.
13:50-14:20 / Roman Hotsiy - Self-documented APIs: myth or reality?
Every couple years a new technology appears promising self-documenting APIs. In my talk, I will present the current state of documentation generation and show what can be done automatically and what can not. Also, I will share my thoughts on new APIs technologies and what they bring to the table.
14:20-14:50 / Karen Sawrey - Not all rocket scientists want to be brain surgeons: lessons learned documenting cryptography APIs
A tech writer’s survival guide to balancing theory and hands-on practice in the docs while keeping your sanity. Road-tested in creating documentation for open source cryptographic products.
14:50-15:00 / Coffee break
Grab a coffee in the hall.
15:00-15:30 / Laurent Doguin - Continuous Swagness for your APIs
Learn how to manage your API documentation and client libraries the continuous way with Swagger and other awesome tools like Jenkins, Artifactory and Clever Cloud.
15:30-16:00 / Nathalie Oostvogels - When the specification fails: Documenting inter-parameter constraints
API specifications are great for providing tool support, but web APIs are constantly evolving and they haven’t quite caught up yet! Their inability to express constraints over multiple parameters make it impossible to correctly describe web APIs, and this causes a lot of bugs to go unnoticed…
16:00-16:10 / Coffee break
Grab a coffee in the hall.
16:10-16:40 / Aleksei Akimov - Beyond the basic Swagger UI: Adyen API Explorer
OpenAPI/Swagger has rapidly become the next standard in the world of API documentation. But Swagger UI, used by most API portals, is far from ideal. At Adyen we reimagined Swagger implementation resulting in a new API Explorer portal; and in my talk I want to share the lessons learnt by our team.
16:40-17:10 / Adam Butler - DocOps: Engineering great documentation
A talk about tools I built when developing Nexmo Developer & how it has enabled us to build a powerful & flexible platform for writing great documentation. The focus will be on the concepts and implementations themselves but will briefly touch upon Nexmo Developer to demonstrate the practicalities.
17:30 / Social meetup @ Rooftop Bar
See you at the Rooftop Bar, where discussion continues over a drink.
